Pet Acupuncture in Bellingham, WA
Pet acupuncture is a gentle therapy that can help many pets with pain, mobility, and chronic health concerns. At our veterinary hospital, Dr. Schraeder brings years of specialized knowledge and extensive experience to every integrative treatment. Most pets—including cats—tolerate acupuncture remarkably well.
What Is Pet Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves inserting thin, solid needles into specific points on the skin and muscle. Its origins date back nearly 4,000 years. These points generally sit along channels through which Qi, or energy, is believed to flow.
The needles used are very fine, and most pets barely react as they’re placed.
How Acupuncture Works
In Chinese medicine, disease reflects an imbalance within the body. From this view, acupuncture works by correcting that imbalance and restoring the flow of Qi and blood.
From a Western medicine perspective, acupuncture is thought to activate the body’s own pain-reduction mechanisms. It may also influence blood flow and stimulate neural pathways to help restore balance. Both perspectives point to the same goal: helping the body heal and function more comfortably.
Conditions Acupuncture May Help
Acupuncture is most commonly used for joint and muscle concerns, but its uses extend further. It may also support pets with:
- Asthma and other respiratory concerns
- Allergies and certain skin conditions
- Behavioral challenges
- Immune system imbalances
- Issues affecting internal organs
Acupuncture often works well alongside our other integrative options, including pet food therapy and pet rehabilitation.
What to Expect During Treatment
Every pet responds differently, so we tailor the treatment plan to the individual. Initial sessions are usually spaced just a few days apart. As your pet responds, we gradually extend the time between visits.
Sessions are calm and low-stress, and most pets settle in easily. We’ll monitor your pet’s progress along the way and adjust the plan as needed.
Is Acupuncture Right for My Pet?
Acupuncture is often considered for pets who haven’t found full relief through conventional treatment alone, or for those managing chronic conditions. Acupuncture can also complement your pet’s routine wellness care.
We’re happy to talk through whether it could be a good fit for your pet.
